First Coast Technical College began as the St. Augustine Technical Center in 1965 when the St. Johns County School Board began gathering data to be submitted to the Florida Department of Education requesting that an area vocational-tehcnial center be established in St. Augustine to serve the tri-county area of Clay, Putnam, and St. Johns counties. In 1967, the centers first director was named and preliminary planning for the construction of a modern facility was undertaken.
In 1999, the St. Augustine Technical Center became Florida’s first post-secondary charter school, changing its name to First Coast Technical Institute. First Coast Technical Institute officially became First Coast Technical College in 2007. The college is sponsored by the St. John’s County School District and governed by a board of directors made up of members of businesses and industry from St. Johns, Clay, and Putnam counties.
