The NAFTC’s mission is to educate the nation about alternative transportation technologies. The NAFTC provides a vital part of the infrastructure necessary for alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles to become viable options in transportation. Through the development and delivery of many kinds of training, from state-of-the-art, in-depth technical training to brief informative presentations for the general public, the NAFTC has brought education and awareness of alternative transportation technologies to millions. Our education and awareness efforts to increase the nation’s energy security and improve air quality are embodied in our motto, “Because Clean Air and Energy Independence Matter.”
The NAFTC serves the public through a variety of products and services:
NAFTC training audiences include technicians, first responders and others from industry, academic, and government organizations such as the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. General Services Administration, National Park Service, NASA, California Highway Patrol, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Walt Disney World, Atlanta MARTA, City of Phoenix, Phoenix Valley Metro Bus Service, Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority, City of Louisville, Kentucky and many other companies, agencies, and government fleets.
NAFTC courses span one to five days and are conducted in a traditional classroom environment at the NAFTC or at your preferred location. Courses are taught by knowledgeable instructors utilizing NAFTC state-of-the-art curricula and include educational discussions, videos, and assessments, as well as lab and shop activities. As a result, training attendees take away in-demand skills and are on the leading edge of alternative fuels, alternative fuel vehicles, and advanced technology vehicle education. (Members of the NAFTC can also attend train-the-trainer courses, allowing them to then train others utilizing the NAFTC curricula.)
NAFTC workshops are structured to fit the needs of the contracting organization and participants. Specific customization to address the audience, timeframe, and desired balance of classroom time versus hands-on activities creates an educational experience that will best benefit those in attendance. Continuing Education Units are available for all NAFTC courses and workshops (additional fee applies).

The NAFTC’s impact is tremendous and far-reaching. Hundreds of thousands have benefited from the alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle training and education the NAFTC offers. Millions more have been reached through outreach programs such as National AFV Day Odyssey. Developed and conducted by the NAFTC, Odyssey is the largest nationwide educational awareness event promoting the use of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. Through its services of providing education and creating awareness about alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles, the NAFTC strives to make a difference in lessening U.S. dependence on foreign oil, strengthening national and energy security, and providing a cleaner environment for future generations.
NAFTC services impact millions nationwide
Under contract with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, West Virginia University (WVU) started the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) in late 1992 to address the urgent need for training and supporting alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) technicians in the field. WVU worked closely with the natural gas industry in conceiving the program. A Train-the-Trainers approach was adopted, and courses were developed to teach alternative fuel vehicle technology to trainers who then return to their institutions to conduct training.
In 1995, WVU announced the addition of six technical training centers to the program to enhance the dissemination of alternative fuels training materials and public education and awareness programs. Since that time, the program has expanded to include approximately 50 members in a formal training network now known as the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium. The NAFTC currently operates through a network of National Training Centers and Associate Training Centers across the country. More than 10,000 technicians have been trained from industry, academic, and governmental organizations. The U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Air Force, U.S. DOE Clean Cities Programs, and private fleets are example users of training materials from the NAFTC. The NAFTC is headquartered at WVU and conducts business under the auspices of the National Research Center for Coal and Energy. The NAFTC headquarters and the National Alternative Fuels Training Laboratory are located in Morgantown, West Virginia.
To foster its mission, the NAFTC seeks the involvement of educational institutions; fuel providers; equipment and parts manufacturers; industry partners; federal and state agencies; and professional, educational, and training associations.
The basic NAFTC Train-the-Trainers courses include classroom time to learn fundamentals, videos, discussions, pre- and post-tests, and lab/shop activities. When in Morgantown, West Virginia, a multi-bay automotive lab is used during training for demonstration, skills training, diagnostics, emissions testing and maintenance issues. New courses are routinely developed to address specific topics in the evolution of the AFV industry.
The NAFTC programs tap the capability of its member National Training Centers and colleges and departments at WVU, including the expertise of WVU’s College of Education and Human Services, College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, the land-grant university Extension Service, and the National Research Center for Coal and Energy.
