Graduate Assistantship
(Non-Teaching) Position – Spring 2012
Technical Writer – Curriculum Developer

Qualified individuals are invited to apply for a Graduate Assistantship at the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC). This position will involve development of curriculum and instructional materials for the NAFTC, a program of the NRCCE – see http://www.naftc.wvu.edu/ for further information about the consortium and its training programs.

This assistantship will be funded for the terms listed above with a possibility of renewal for additional semesters. The assistantship requires an average of 20 hours per week year round including semester breaks (there are no paid holidays or vacations), during standard business hours, on-site at the NAFTC Headquarters in the Ridgeview Industrial Park on Bakers Ridge Road (assistant will be responsible for his/her own transportation). Assistant will be paid a salary of $1,250.00 per month (subject to taxes) and will be eligible for a tuition waiver for each semester falling within the term of the assistantship.

Required Qualifications: (Candidates who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.)
  • Registration as a regular-status student in a WVU graduate program and enrollment on a full-time basis for each term during this assistantship.
  • References attesting to successful experience performing technical writing/curriculum development in a highly technical subject area.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into terms that the general public can understand.
  • Proficiency using Windows XP/Vista, Microsoft Office, GroupWise and other software products.
  • Self-directedness, organization, attention to detail, and responsiveness to client needs and project deadlines, ability to work collaboratively with the NAFTC headquarters staff, NAFTC member institutions, other graduate assistants, and student employees. Finalists will be interviewed in person.
Desirable Qualifications: (Candidates who possess these additional qualifications are more likely to be selected.)
  • Familiarity with automotive technology, particularly alternative fuels, or a demonstrated ability to learn such concepts rapidly with little assistance (attested to by candidate’s references).
  • Familiarity with Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.

TEMP Writer/Editor Job Description

Purpose
Supports the Mission of the NAFTC (National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium) by assisting the Assistant Director – Communications in the development of communications, marketing, curricula and other training materials, in regard to writing, editing and proofreading.

Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities are functional in nature, and performed under general supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides writing and editorial assistance in the development of NAFTC curriculum, training products, marketing materials, newsletters, and other written products to support the NAFTC program requirements.
  • Provides support to other NAFTC program areas by providing editorial review of other nationally distributed publications, marketing materials, curricula and other products as needed. Assists internal staff with technical writing assistance as needed.
  • Writes regular news releases on newsworthy activities of NAFTC.
  • Write, review, proofread, edit, and assist with the production and publication of other written products and materials as assigned.
  • Assist with content development and posting for organization websites and social media sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to produce effective, clear and cognizant copy for newsletters, newspapers, magazines, web, press releases and other venues

  • Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability in the writing and final publication of newsletters
  • Demonstrated ability to work with professionals in technical and other fields to conduct interviews and determine their information needs/interests and to communicate clearly via verbal and written means with people of all backgrounds and educational levels.
  • Ability to effectively research, compile and translate technical information into written materials that target appropriate audiences.
  • Ability to work in diverse teams to accomplish work-plan objectives
  • Ability to manage and prioritize numerous, simultaneous tasks in a deadline driven environment.
  • Knowledge of standards of accepted style guides such a Chicago and Associated Press
  • Knowledge of publication production, proper grammar, standard editing/proofreading procedures and journalistic and design principles
  • Knowledge of marketing and public relations concepts and principles
  • Knowledge of basic publication layout and design principles for newsletter, brochures, fact sheets, etc.
  • Maintains skills in, or knowledge of, professional principles, legal and/or reporting requirements affecting area of responsibility.
  • Ability to read and interpret information such as industry news articles and NAFTC curricula
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups or employees of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
