The NAFTC offers firefigher, emergency medical services, and law enforcement first responder courses on alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) safety. The program also offers a comprehensive course for those interested in becoming a course instructor.
These three stand-alone courses are designed to educate firefighter, emergency medical services, and law enforcement on how to safely interact with an AFV involved in a traffic incident. This includes education on the fuels, their properties and origins, how these vehicle differ from conventionally fueled vehicles, and proper, audience specific procedures to implement when dealing with an accident involving an AFV.
Rising concerns about the effects of fossil fuels on the world’s environment combined with their increased cost when compared with alternative fuels are making AFVs more common on our nation’s roadways. With increased vehicle use, the chance of these new technologies being involved in a vehicular accident also increases.
Firefighters need to be trained on the differences between these vehicles and their conventional counterparts and on the proper procedures for safely addressing incidents involving natural gas, propane autogas, hydrogen, electric drive, ethanol and biofuel powered vehicles. This course is designed to educate firefighters on the properties and procedures to follow when dealing with alternative fuel vehicles. Anyone can attend these classes as a participant, however only a firefighter with a training background can participate in a train-the-trainer specific course.
