WVU NAFTC Community and Technical College members identified a critical gap in EV education.

The lack of accreditation standards for EV programs inspired select members to develop recommended accreditation standards presented in this professional development workshop. The project and workshop focus solely on U.S. markets and educational institutions.

The Summer 2026 workshop scholarship helps cover out-of-pocket costs and is available to all accepted participants who complete the program.

How the workshop fills the gap in EV education and prepares institutions for accreditation-ready programs.

The Challenge

Electric and hybrid vehicles are rapidly growing in the automotive market, creating demand for technicians trained in EV systems. Educators and their students benefit from recognized standards that assure students and employers that an EV program’s quality meets the safety and technical demands of the workplace.

The Solution

The National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) developed standards recommendations for EV associate degree programs, including:

  • Detailed EV educational task recommendations
  • Curriculum framework recommendations
  • EV facilities and equipment information
  • Budget considerations
  • Instructor training recommendations
  • Educational pathways from high school diploma to college degree and credentials for working technicians

Alongside the standards recommendations, this workshop features:

  • Online, self-paced Weber State University Phase I EV training by renowned EV educator,Professor John Kelly
  • Online, self-paced EV AAS accreditation recommendations by experienced NAFTC instructors
  • One-day, in-person experience at an NAFTC member site in Lima, OH; Raleigh, NC; Layton, UT; or Whittier, CA
  • Bonus online, self-paced modules to grow your student body

Total time: about 17 to 20 hours in all.

Who’s Eligible

This workshop is designed for educators and leaders shaping the future of automotive programs.

Ideal workshop participants:

Eligible institutions:

  • Community and technical colleges with automotive programs
  • Schools offering or planning to offer EV automotive education
You do not need an existing EV program to participate.

Upon completion, participants receive a Weber State EV Phase I Certificate of Completion, an NAFTC Workshop Certificate of Completion, and limited-time access to the accreditation recommendations report in the NAFTC Learning Center.

Sounds great, but what does it cost?

The Summer 2026 Workshop $500 Scholarship helps cover out-of-pocket costs for:

  • Weber State EV Phase I training @ $375
  • Travel to the In-person Experience location of your choice

NAFTC Learning Center workshop components and the Summer 2026 scholarship are covered by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (EE0010114).

Scholarship Qualifications

  • Available to all accepted summer 2026 participants
  • Must complete steps 1-4 by September 15, 2026
  • Must submit your completed W-9 form through the NAFTC Learning Center by September 15th, 2026

Bonus modules and a closing webinar are not required to qualify for the scholarship.

Scholarship checks are issued typically within 45 days after meeting all qualifications.

W-9 form will be provided after you have completed the necessary steps through the NAFTC Learning Center.

Scholarships are provided through the U.S. Department of Energy (EE0010114).

Complete Weber State EV Phase I training and submit your Certificate of Completion to unlock Step 2.

Practice EV safety concepts at a high-quality EV education facility and prepare for the final online recommendations modules.

Complete online modules describing standards-based recommendations for building a high-quality EV program.

Complete the workshop evaluation to receive your certificate of completion and scholarship payment.

Workshop Content

The content covers the critical elements of an EV Associate of Applied Science degree program.

  • EV fundamentals and safety
  • Curriculum structure for EV associate degrees
  • New EV-focused education tasks aligned with ASE Education Foundation standards
  • Resources for instructors and institutions: facilities, equipment, training, budget, and degree pathways
  • Strategies for increasing student recruitment and retention

Three bonus modules are available for a limited time. Join NAFTC for a live webinar at the conclusion of the workshop to meet the project team, expand your network, and share questions and ideas.

One day of hands-on EV learning at four member locations.

This one-day in-person experience gives you direct insight into EV facilities and the safety requirements for a high-quality EV program.

Workshop Syllabus

Appropriate Dress

You must wear hard-toed shoes with rubber soles in the vehicle bays. Also, wear cotton clothing with full-length trousers (no shorts) and long-sleeved shirts. No jewelry. The training sites will provide PPE, but attendees may bring their own insulated rubber gloves (Class 0) and goggles, glasses, or face shield (Z87.1 Standard).

How Are Acceptance Decisions Made?

Applications are automatically evaluated for initial elegibility. Elegible applications are then reviewed by the selection committee. Only two applicants per Community and Technical College may be accepted.

The geographic distribution of applicants may be considered. Broader geographic distribution of participants is higher priority than two participant per CTC.

Learning Center accounts are free, and workshop access lasts until January 31, 2027.

Workshop steps

  • Step 0: Start at the NAFTC Learning Center and complete Module 1: Welcome and Workshop Overview.
  • Step 1: Complete Weber State University Phase I EV training and upload your Certificate of Completion by 11:59 pm Eastern on Sunday, June 21.
  • Step 2: Attend the one-day, in-person experience on Friday, June 26, 2026.
  • Step 3: Complete the NAFTC online recommendations modules about building a high-quality EV program.
  • Step 4: Complete the online workshop evaluation.

The $500 scholarship is issued after completion and submission of the W-9 form, typically within 45 days.

Expanding Recruitment Modules and Live Webinar

Participate in optional bonus modules on expanding your student body, designed to help you attract and graduate broader range of students and strengthen your program. Look for Section 10: Expanding Recruitment modules in this workshop in the NAFTC Learning Center.
