The Automotive Technology program prepares students for successful careers as service technicians in the rapidly growing automotive repair industry. By providing students with exposure and hands-on experience on a variety of domestic and import vehicles, this broad-based curriculum prepares graduates for a wide range of job opportunities in new car dealerships, independent repair shops, or fleet repair facilities.

Classes are designed for beginners or those with some experience. Students may earn an associate degree, complete a number of certificates, or take individual courses to meet their educational and career goals. The Associate Degree program in Automotive Technology provides instruction in all aspects of the automobile, including the latest electronic systems. Students master the skills needed to diagnose and repair automobiles while working in the college’s well-equipped auto lab. The experienced faculty work closely with students to prepare them for a career and to become certified A.S.E. (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) Master Automotive Technicians.

The program is accredited through NATEF. To receive this certification, the program is evaluated against industry standards of quality every five years by a team of external evaluators. The certification process ensures that the curriculum includes all of the appropriate competencies needed to properly prepare entry-level technicians and is delivered by A.S.E. certified faculty on current technology equipment and vehicles. All automotive faculty are A.S.E. Master Certified technicians with extensive industry repair experience.

NAFTC National Training Center Profile

The University of Northwestern Ohio is an entrepreneurial, not-for-profit institution of high learning, preparing students for careers and productive citizenship that encompass the business, professional, corporate and technological communities by providing quality education and training in response to the needs and aspirations of our constituents.

The College of Technologies offers associate degrees and diploma programs in the Automotive; Diesel Truck; Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration; High Performance; Alternate Fuels; and Agricultural Equipment fields. These programs take from 54 weeks to 2 years to complete. Classes are held Monday through Thursday in the morning, afternoon and evening. Under special circumstances, early-morning classes are offered from 12:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Enrollment in the technical courses of the College of Technologies is limited to 20 students. Graduates of the College of Technologies programs are trained to perform entry-level skills in their field(s) of endeavor as well as to enter management programs because of the associate degree courses in general education.

The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) has evaluated the instruction, course of study, instructor credentials, facilities and equipment of the University of Northwestern Ohio Automotive and Medium/Heavy-Duty Truck programs and determined that they meet or exceed the high standards set by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Both of these programs are Master Certified by ASE/NATEF. Additionally, NATEF has certified the College of Technologies’ Alternate Fuels and Toyota T-Ten programs and the academic courses which meet or exceed these same standards. The university is one of the original members of the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC). Alternate fuels is becoming a large component in the transportation industry; therefore, we offer the alternate fuels program so that students can be more marketable when looking for employment.
