• Evening – Black Bear baseball game and tailgate.

After learning the ins and outs of successful grant writing, how about some minor league baseball?

The West Virginia Black Bears are the single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates and play in the New York–Penn League. In fact, the Black Bears won the league championship in 2015! The Monongalia County Ballpark—the Black Bears home field and not far from the NAFTC offices—is a 3,500-seat stadium with the usual amenities and features locally brewed craft beers on the party deck. First pitch for the June 19th game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Across the street is a terrific view of Morgantown where we will tailgate before the game.

The NAFTC will purchase tickets and provide dinner at the tailgate. If you’d like to enjoy a craft beer, you’ll have to pay for that on your own. State law doesn’t allow us to buy your alcohol.

June 20

• Morning – Behind the scenes tour of the West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit System

The Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system was designed and developed in the early 1970s by Boeing. On Oct. 24, 1972, the first phase of the PRT was dedicated. Phase I included 45 vehicles operating between Walnut Street and Evansdale. President Richard Nixon’s daughter, Tricia, was on board for one of the first demonstration rides. Phase II extended the tracks to the Health Sciences Center and added 28 more vehicles by July 1979.

Each car can accommodate 8 seated passengers and comfortably carry a total of 20 passengers travelling more than 30 miles per hour. Around 83 million people have traveled the PRT since 1975.Approximately 15,000 people ride the PRT during the school year every day.

• Afternoon – Tour of the WVU Center for Alternative Fuel Engines and Emissions.

CAFEE is a non-profit research center operating within academic surroundings and is a $4 million annual enterprise within the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. The CAFEE staff works extensively on emission reduction research — particularly engine technologies, post-combustion technologies, after-treatment evaluation, and fuel technologies.

CAFEE rose to national fame when the program uncovered the Volkswagen emissions scandal during routine testing.

The Expo will be held on the campus of West Virginia University. Lunch and transportation will be provided on training and tour days.

Transportation will be provided on June 19 and 20 to and from the hotels listed below.
